TL;DR

“As practitioners, it’s not just a month for us, it’s year-round. But the more people we can use as an industry to spark up conversations and brainstorm during certain times of the year, and spread awareness for people who aren’t in the industry, it gives us an opportunity to bring awareness to those who aren’t in the industry or don’t have to worry about these things every day.”

Secure the world

It’s nearly October, and while we can ignore how quickly we got here, we can’t ignore that it’s also the start of Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance co-lead the awareness initiative to focus on elevating topics on digital security and preventative actions to build resilience.

And each year, CISA shares resources focused on their initiative: secure the world. But this year, we’re putting an Expel spin on Cybersecurity Awareness Month. We’re highlighting the connection between security practitioners and their connection to you—whether you’re a marketer, fellow practitioner, sales person, executive, or anyone in between.

Expel’s theme for this month is: a secure world is built together.

What does a secure world is built together mean?

When we started planning for programming for the month, we realized that content for awareness is often aimed at the general public. It usually promotes great security hygiene practices like changing your passwords and updating your software.

But we noticed there was a missing component: the connection to security practitioners, and what happens to their workload when you don’t do those things. It really got us thinking, and we realized that you can’t secure the world alone.

Security teams must trust that their coworkers are following the best practices and guidelines they share. And those coworkers have to trust their security teams have their best interests in mind, too. You can’t secure the world—whether it’s your business or personal one—without that trust in place on both sides of the fence.

As Zach Zeid, Principal Detection & Response Engineer at Expel says, “Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a great opportunity to remind everything that security is everyone’s responsibility. The best security education programs are the ones that are inclusive, accessible, and relevant to everyone, regardless of their security expertise.”

Keep an eye out for new resources throughout the month

Throughout the month, we’ve got some great new resources we’ll be sharing that highlight both sides of the equation. So whether you’re a security pro or an average Joe (at least when it comes to security), we’ve got you covered.

You can find them on our Cybersecurity Awareness Month resource page, or on our LinkedIn page

And don’t forget to do your security trainings!
