June is Pride Month, dedicated to celebrating and remembering the history of the LGBTQ+ community as they continue to fight for equality. This year, Expel’s LGBTQ+ employee resource group (ERG), The Treehouse, put together some great programming to educate and celebrate with fellow Expletives. Throughout the month, the group shared an informational series called Trailblazer Tuesday via their Slack channel, highlighting individuals who have made names for themselves representing the LGBTQ+ community.
Featured Pride Month trailblazers
Featured trailblazers included:
Alok Vaid-Menon (they/them) ⎸ Writer, performance artist & media personality
Alok is a gender non-conforming and transfeminine artist who creates and shares works detailing violence against trans and non gender non-confirming people to advocate for freedom from gender norms, bodily diversity, gender neutrality, and self-determination.
Chella Man (she/he/they) ⎸ Artist, author, director & actor
Chella is a deaf, genderqueer, transmasculine Chinese Jewish creator who uses their platform to explore fluid identity and challenge societal norms. Chella’s most notable role was as the first deaf, trans, masculine actor of color in a DC superhero film, playing Jericho in Titans.
Tig Notaro (she/they) ⎸ Comedian, writer, actor & director
Tig is a breast cancer survivor who turned her diagnosis into a vulnerable comedy set, and has also been featured in a variety of shows, including Star Trek: Discovery. Tig is a true storyteller who blurs the lines between comedy, healing, and queer storytelling.
Charlie Craggs (she/her) ⎸ Activist & author
Charlie is a British transgender activist and author who was included in the Rainbow List of the 101 most influential LGBTQIA+ people in the UK for The Independent. Charlie began her rise to fame in 2013 when she started a project in college at the London College of Fashion called “Nail transphobia” where people can get manicures and talk about trans issues (which she still offers today!).
Expel’s Pride Month programs
They also hosted three events, open to all Expletives:
- Collaborative conversation: Building community through adversity, which was a group conversation with representatives from all four of Expel’s ERGs discussing how we can build community locally (virtually for Expel, and in our home communities)
- A virtual drag cocktail making event, which was a fun Friday bonding experience on a Friday afternoon, open to anyone to sign up, with mocktail kits available as well
- Anti-LGBTQIA+ Legislation and its Impact with Charlie Ocean, a discussion on information about the current political landscape regarding LGBTQIA+ legislation’s impact, and how community members and allies can support.
The leadership team from The Treehouse shared, “We’re so glad to have the space at Expel to prioritize bringing our authentic selves to work, and to be able to celebrate what makes us different AND what brings us together during Pride.”
Cheers to celebrating Pride all year long!
