The managed services market is ch-ch-ch-changing. And we couldn't be more excited to help rock the boat.

Herndon, Va. – August 14, 2019 – Expel1, the leader in making customers smile when they hear the term “managed security,” has been included for the second year in a row in the Market Guide for Managed Detection and Response Services2 report produced by Gartner, the world’s leading research and advisory company. The report provides an overview of the MDR services market, and suggests “security and risk management leaders should use this research to determine if MDR services are a good fit for their goals, use cases and requirements.”
According to the report, “Many buyers gravitate to the MDR providers because the response capabilities are a differentiator from many MSSPs. Well-performed incident response takes time and skill, which many organizations just don’t have, especially when there are multiple threats being detected in a short time frame. Deeper investigation, analysis and validation of threats, along with enhanced guidance on how to contain and mitigate the threat, provide significant value to MDR customers.” The report also estimates that “by 2024, 25% of organizations will be using MDR services, up from less than 5% percent today.”
“Slinging facts about APT 199 might win you points at trivia night,” said Dave Merkel, CEO at Expel. “But we think organizations of all shapes and sizes need more than a heads up about the latest threats with some alerts dumped in their laps. They need to know which alerts are serious and what they need to do about them (including advice on how to make sure the same problems don’t happen over and over again). We’re glad to see this report from Gartner summarize how we believe the managed service market is evolving.”
Expel was also recognized as a Sample Vendor in Gartner’s Hype Cycle for Threat-Facing Technologies, 2019 report3, which states “this Hype Cycle can be a useful visual guide in assessing the security technology and security service choices that are available to provide threat mitigation and visibility to enterprises’ IT infrastructures and resources against threats.”
Expel is flipping today’s managed security model on its head (Ouch!) by taking a technology-driven approach that lets analysts focus on what humans do best: exercise judgment and manage relationships. The company offers 24×7 monitoring through its security operations center-as-a-service, using the security tools customers already have in place. Expel then helps customers make better, faster decisions about security issues by giving them real answers and specific recommendations instead of repackaging customers’ alerts and tossing them back in their laps. Expel also offers practical advice on how to prevent issues from happening over and over again.
